I wondered if anyone could help with a newsletter question.

I have opened a new store online - www.themekitchen.com - which I plan to replace my old site - www.kbhoutlet.com - with. I have a few hundred newsletter subscribers from the old store and I want to add theme to the new store’s newsletter mailing list.

Since the old store will be turning into the new store, is it ethical for me to automatically add the subscribers from the old newsletter to the new one, or should I attempt to get their permission? And if I should get their permission, what is the best way of doing so while keeping as many of them as possible?

I will be turning the old site’s newsletter and newsletter signup form into the new one (i.e. When someone visits The KBH Outlet and wants to sign up for the newsletter, they will be directed to Theme Kitchen’s newsletter, as I will no longer be sending out the old newsletter within the next few months). I plan to close the old site, so I’m thinking it would be ok to add the old subscribers to the new newsletter.

Any thoughts?

If your managing your own list, go ahead and import. If you can save the IP records of the original subscription, that can be helpful to you in the future.

If your mailing list service provider requires a double-opt in even with import, then you may want to consider an incentive offer.

Remind the old list when and why they originally joined, who you and your business are, and provide the incentive (discount, free offer... whatever fits).

Have a handful of messages that strategically promote this incentive and encourage everyone to register for the new list (or simply confirm when they receive their double opt in email).

Alice... thanks for the reply re: the Clickbank issue. I didn't like seeing my affiliates lose out on commissions as others give themselves discounts that were never offered... but it took me a few hours to realize it's all part of the game (risk) of affiliate marketing.

No problem, but if you run your own program, you can set terms that they can't buy through their own links. We do that on a couple of programs.

Here's how I am looking at this:

I'm replacing the old store with the new store, so I am essentially giving the old store a new name and giving the old newsletter a new name. In this context, I don't see why I would need to get their permission.

Before I make any moves, I want to make sure I understand the spam rules so that I don't end up upsetting a lot of people.

If I sent an email out explaining that "The KBH Lifestyle Newsletter" was now going to be the "Theme Kitchen Newsletter" and offer a gift certificate to each member for their understanding, perhaps I won't have negative feedback.

Alice, I appreciate your comment. I do have reports of when each member signined up, however I may not have the ip addresses. I'm thinking that will be enough proof.

If you are managing both lists, moving them over shouldn't be an issue. However, if you're going to be sending from a new email address and a new name, you'll want to be careful. If you can offer your reader's some consistency or a slower transition to the new email/name/etc. that you want to change, that'll probably serve you better.
