If you had to start over, what would you do differently?

Hello everyone,

This is a question that I ask myself from time to time and I always seem to come up with the same answer.

If I had to start over, I would try to focus on one opportunity at a time. When I first started years ago, I tried to promote everything under the sun simultaneously. I found that this approach was unfair to me and especially my customers and prospects.

Now I have learned to endorse and promote opportunities one at a time that I feel good about and could be of paramount benefit to my customers. Taking this approach allows me to concentrate more on the actual service and assistance I can provide.

What would you do differently if you had to start over again?

I started a consumer electronics news blog, and the problem is that it's a constant drain on my time. If I could start over again (and I'm actually very close to doing that!) knowing what I know now, I'd pick a business model that didn't require me to watch out for press releases and new products and update the site so often.

Like John says, time is my only truly limited resource, and by sinking all of my time and energy into this project, I've lost other opportunities. Fortunately, IM is also my "day job," so I learn new stuff all the time.

My big question is should I stay in the same niche (a certain kind of consumer electronics) and branch out into doing other things, or should I just dump it and move to another niche all together?

If I had to start over again, I would have stayed out of the "make money" and "internet marketing" niches and focus instead on using the "knowledge" that I learned from internet marketing to apply to a specific niche. So, for example, let's say I understand internet marketing and my niche was accounting. I could use the principles that I learn in internet marketing to generate so much business for myself that I would have to hire help while my competitors struggle because most accountants don't know how to market.

I just set up a google adwords campaign for my wife's business that she's going to make at least $30,000 bare minimum. She only pays $100 a month and it took me 5 minutes to set up. That is just so much easier to do when you are outside the internet marketing niche than when you are trying to compete with experienced marketers that know just as much, if not more than you do.

I would have learned and applied the marketing funnel more effectively to build my business. In other words I would have developed and put into place my marketing system in place sooner.

I wouldn't have spent my time doing so much SEO (as was mentioned in traffic secrets). Yes, you'll get on top after a truly monstrous amount of work. No, you won't stay there. And you have no recourse once you do get banned or demoted.

Maybe 6 years ago SEO was a winning game, but the competition is too heavy now and the algorythms are too smart these days.

If I had to start over again,

1) I would use a Content Management System, instead of using Dreamweaver to make every html page my self. Of Course, a CMS with SEO friendly URLS.

2) Hide my email adress from my site. Because I taught my self html programming, I used the mailto instruction to put my email in my webpage. What a big mistake. Spambots captured my address and I will receive tons of spam forever. I learned later to create forms, my visitors can fill out, but was too late. I would kiss someone who adviced me not to put the mailto instruction in my website.

3) And will do again, not to listen too much to the gurus, and instead listening to my intuition. Nowadays I earn very good money on the internet, but did things that every emarketer advice not to do. But I did and it worked for me. Being a netrepreneur, I started by intuition, made mistakes, learned by myself and received so much traffic and earned money, that when I receive an offer on my Inbox, talking about how they generate x vistors a month and earn x money, I LOL "Boy, if I receive much more traffic than him with only one site, and earn more money than him and he is a "guru"

4) Will test more quickly. Testing is that matters. Don´t being afraid of making tests and looking for new findings from other webmasters on the forums, and testing. If works, I keep doing. If don´t, I will replace with another test that works.

5) Don´t make projects that I don´t love. My first project I started for love and the money followed. But I changed my focus and tried to make new projects for money. Big mistake. I lost the time and the money doesn´t arrive yet.

100 times better make a project for love rather than for money. Because for money doesn´t work.

This is a very interesting question, but it's easy, because now you know all your mistakes and how to avoid them. You know how to achieve your goal, that is something that earlier you didn't know
Then I can say that I'd study everything about my niche before to take action. This is the most important thing to do trying to build a business. Education and Patience.
