Why Firefox...WHY?

Hey. I've been wondering something for a while. Why do people like the Firefox browser? I understand that it is supposed to be more secure than IE AND it's not a Microsoft product...but I was wondering if there are other reasons people are making the switch.

It's very slow, it has trouble with javascript and I've run into a few other problems with it. And no, I'm not counting the fact that it HATES my less than perfect HTML.

Just curious. I know Earl just said he switched over and was wondering why people like it.

In general Firefox loads pages much faster as they cut out all of the Micrsoft unneeded software add ons and such. It is optimized for speed(not sure why it is slow for you). From a programming stand point it is much more secure.

I think you hit on the main reasons though. There are a lot of exploits on IE if you visit the wrong page it changes your browser settings I have yet to run across this with Firefox

Top three reasons I like Firefox (some have already been mentioned)

1.) Blocks 98% of all pop-ups (aside from those generated with DHTML, Hoverads, etc.) by simply checking a box inside the Tools > Options panel. Compare this to IE, where you have to download the GOOG toolbar to block pop-ups and the GOOG toolbar is NOT as effective as it used to be! I think sites are designing ways to get around the GOOG toolbar pop-up suppression. Since the majority of web surfers use IE, it may take a while before site owners focus their efforts on trying to beat Firefox's built-in pop-up suppression.

2.) Tabbed browsing. This is great b/c I can open multiple pages within the browser. Makes my screen less cluttered, especially when I have several software programs open (Dreamweaver, MS Word, Excel, etc.).

3.) Live bookmarks for RSS feeds.

I HATE the annoying clicking sound that IE makes when it loads a .SWF file, a .PDF file, (or simply when you click on the HOME or REFRESH buttons). I'm sure this can be turned off, but the clicking sound is enabled by default, and it annoys the heck out of me. IE makes a double-clicking sound--once when you click on a link to a page, and then, if the page you're transferred to loads a plug-in (i.e. Flash player for .SWF's), you get ANOTHER clicking sound.

As someone else mentioned, Firefox has better security than IE (no Active X controls) and the majority of hacks/exploits are designed for IE b/c it's the mainstream browser. I agree with Derrick about pages loading faster.

I LOVE firefox, its great, I have had no problems really, sometimes, very few times, and usually with the same sites, blogs, I'll get a box pop up saying url not found, but refresh, and its ok.
Thats my ONLY issue with it.

I love it because as said, its more secure, my pages load faster most of the time, the tab browsing alone makes it worth while, if you blogalot, it can be handy, having a few pages open in one tab.
Makes copying and pasting a breeze.

I like some of the extensions, they can be very handy.
I like the fact it blocks alot of pop ups, as said.

Also, I love to use notetab lite (free) as it also has tabs, and its so much better than notepad.. I use it all the time.

So those two together make my life alot easier.Tabbing is great.

I saw the recommendation on Harvey Segal's newsletter I think, ages ago, I emailed him saying thanks, a great tool, and his reply? He never closes it, he uses it for EVERYTHING, like html, etc. So I am looking to learn to use it even more.

Highly recommended.

Why not?

FireFox is da bomb. Doesn't crash as much as IE. Nice tabbed browsing. Lots of useful plugins. Blocks more ads. Need I go on?

Ummmm...because of my interest in Internet marketing, I actually like to see the pop-ups. I get mad when a pop-up is cookied and I can't go back and look at it if it gets blocked. Doesn't anybody else like looking at pop-ups? LOL.

You can have firefox let you allow pop ups, when it gets blocked, a yellow bar should be on the top of the page, with a click here for options, and you can set it to allow pop ups from this site, the beauty of it is, you get to choose which sites you allow them from, but firefox will block them first.
Once you set it to allow from a site, it should allow it next time you view that site.

I guess I do like foirefox so much more than IE, but each to their own, we are all different, and that ain't gonna change!

But hey no harm in having boith is there.

Alice, I have three browsers on my Mac - IE, Safari, and hubby just recently installed Firefox for me, telling me how great it is. But I find it slow ... very slow. The tabs are nice, but I'm back to using IE and sometimes Safari.

Hope this helps.I saw it somewhere ..did it.and it worked great...

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

FireFox has this tabbed browsing feature that I like very much and also this "ScrapBook" extenstion that I use to save other people's web site with the code intact to my PC.

I don't understand why IE doesn't have tabbed browsing!
