Hi Everyone,
I'm 49 and brand new to marketing. I've bought a few of Dan Kennedy's old products and a ten year old tape (now dvd) set of Bill Myers stuff. All of this might be a waste of my time since it's so old (is it?), but Bill mentions the standard rate and data service. Is this still a viable source and can it still be bought w/o the subscription service? I'll probably have more questions so if any of you want to steer me in a better direction, I'm all ears.
Cheers,
Buddy

Hey Buddy,

Im really not sure what he is talking about "standard rate" and "data service" but it sounds a little ond school. A Better approach would be the SERF GP aproach:

S is for Search Engine Optimization - for website optimization including keywords, structure, metatags, html page and pdf titles, etc. There is a wealth of info on SEO on the internet.

E is for Ezines – submit lots and lots of your articles to free Ezine directories, which are then published on other websites and included in email newsletters. Look up “ezine directory free” in Google (without the quotes).

R is for Reciprocal links – Ezines give you very valuable one-way links. Exchange links with other websites to get reciprocal links. Use a software tool like Zeus or Aurelis or go on a free link exchange directory to find link partners. Our site is now so popular that we get link requests from other webmasters. This suits me, as I don’t have to go looking for link partners so much.

F is for Forums – join forums and newsgroups in your industry group like this one and post lots of replies. These get you visitors and also inbound one-way links as search engines trawl these for content.

G is for Grow – keep your content fresh with relevant news and steadily grow the number of web pages over time. For continually updating content, add an RSS feed to your home page. Google and some other search engines favour large sites and sites that grow in size. Two ways to grow your site are to add new products and add free ezine articles from ezine directories.

P is for press releases – submit press releases to free press release sites whenever you add a new product or have some other interesting news. These get posted on other sites and give you valuable one-way links.

This is the basic strategy. Other pointers are:

-submit your site to all of the major search engines and submit site maps to at least Google and Yahoo
-add Google AdSense adverts as this will also help your visibility in Google
-have freebies that visitors can download at no charge with your contact details on them
-add a Privacy Policy page, an About Us page and a street address and contact phone number as these lend your business credibility

Adam,
Thanks tons. SRAS is actually actually a snail mail mailing list source. Sorry I forgot this is web only. Thanks again, I still have a lot to learn.

Actually it's SRDS, and I believe you may be able to
subscribe to an online version at SRDS.com, but I'm
not sure.

It's still a very viable way of finding lists, but also
specific niche markets.

It's pretty expensive, but if you live in or near a large
city, you should be able to find a copy that you can
use at the library (not usually in smaller towns).

thanks ad,
Bill Myers said it's possible to purchase one copy. He also mentioned the cost of the subscription. My library doesn't have it so I might have to trek to Boston.
