What Does Your Typical Internet Marketing Day Look Like?

Hello Fellow Marketers,

I don't know about you all, but I was just thinking about how I spend my typical "day" with internet marketing. I put "day" in quotes because this is a part time business for me, so I'm usually only able to spare 1-5 hours a day tops.

I don't know about you all, but I spend WAY TOO MUCH time on doing things that are not very profitable for my business and not enough time on the things that are profitable for my business and I'm sure my income has suffered for it.

John Resse talked about this a little bit on his blog and he said the following:

I used to spend a lot of time on a Web Hosting related forum, had over 900 posts, but now I visit their once a day or so, but I replaced that forum with here

Well I am making more defined goals and crossing them off when I get them done.

I agree to I found myself getting so side-tracked with checking my stats, replying to email, reading newsletters and replying to discussion forums that the amount of time I actually spent making money was alarmingly small.

So I have now changed that for 2005 and my plan now is that I am going to have a certain amount of "work hours" each day where the only things I am allowed to do during that time is anything that will actually contribute to making me more money.

Then once these "work hours" are over then I can reply to my emails, read any good newsletters I received, go replying to discussion forums and check my stats for the day.

At least this way I am now spending most of my time working on things that will make me money rather then getting caught up in the scary check stats-check email-check forums cycle I was doing to much in 2004.

Also I now took John's advice and writing down everything you need to do and prioritizing it in order from what will make you the most money to the least money and then doing everything in that order.

So now when I hop on my computer I have a clear idea of exactly what I need to do first, second, third, etc. today. I also took his other advice about getting away from the computer and I'm now doing that as well and am only sitting on my computer when I actually need to do something on it.

For example a lot of things such as writing sales letter, creating a mini-course, etc. can be done away from a computer for most of it (since I like writing some of this stuff by hand first anyways) and at least by doing this in another room I can't end up getting side-tracked by going "oh lets take a little break and check the forums again" and then end up wasting the next hour doing nothing useful.

Hopefully this will help me be a LOT more productive in 2005. Just my thoughts anyways.

My wife just the other day said that she was trying to explain to someone what I do, and she told them:

"I don't really understand what he does, but he pecks around on his laptop all day, something about Google and "keywords", and somehow that gets people to send him money."

Hmmm...lets see....

Take my daughter to school, come back and get settled.

I check my emails and respond to them (about 1 hour). Then I work on the projects I have scheduled for that day for two to three hours. This would include any marketing activities, developing new products, idea generation and creating video tutorials, etc.

Afterwards, I eat lunch, relax for an hour and listen to music. Next, I go to the various forums to read, and maybe respond to, posts (about 30-minutes).

I check my stats, do a little recordkeeping and look up additional keywords or phrases, write press releases, etc. (about 1 to 2 hours).

Network with other Marketers online via chat and email. Check and respond to emails again (about 1 hour).

Anywhere from 3 to 5pm I relax for the rest of the day until 11pm when I check my emails one last time. Then it's off to bed.

Now, if I'm consulting that day, I shorten the time to check and respond to emails. I also put off the projects until night time, which takes away from my sleep time.
