Hello everyone,
There is a lot of talk online about the importance of having a high page rank. In fact some people stress the importance of page rank and judge a site by its page rank. So for the past few months I worked to get a higher page rank.
What I noticed was, my page rank went up but my sales didn't. So I decided to do some testing on my own. I changed some keywords in the first two paragraphs of the homepage changed the title, description and keyword meta tags and then waited.
The site is indexed by search engines every 48 hrs. but I waited 35 days just to be sure all the search engines spidered and reindexed the site before I would make a judgement on the results.
The results were, I lost a total of 1,000 unique visitors from Google, Yahoo and MSN my page rank dropped to 4. But my sales doubled. I ran this test in September before the holidays and sales have been consistent since then.
Is page rank as important as some claim?
I would appreciate your feedback, experiences etc.
Thanks Scherif |

PR is MUCH less important than it was even a year ago. More inportant is the relevance of the sites that link to you (i.e. you want sites in the same genre as yours links to you) and the anchor text used (i.e., if your site is about blue widgets, you want the link itself to contain the term blue widgets).
I have several PR5 sites that routinely outrank PR6 & 7 sites for their targeted phrases. |

You must consider:
On-Page factors: Structure, Keyword density, Meta tags, etc...
Off-Page factors: Overall Page Rank, Topic Theme page rank, relevance of the sites that link to you and the used anchor text.
Other factors: Fresh content.

PageRank is Google's measure of a site's "importance", but by itself it doesn't measure it's "relevance" when it comes to certain keyphrases.
From Google:
| Quote: | PageRank Explained
PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important."
Important, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don't match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page's content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it's a good match for your query. |
I really only see it come into play when you are trying to rank well for really competitive keyphrases, but you don't need to rank well for competitive phrases to get tons of traffic.
I would focus more on the things that Francisco mentioned. "On the page" factors, as he mentioned them, are enough to rank well for non-competitive phrases. For more competitive phrases, you'll want to look at his "Off the page" factors.
But despite the fact I tell people not to worry about PR, when my home jumped from a PR5 to a PR6 (and many internal pages moved up too), I saw an immediate jump in the number of phrases for which I ranked well. But I have no scientific study to tell you exactly what happened.

This internal (intra-domain) linking between pages -- such as using your keywords in the anchor text (the clickable link). _________________

I normally go for pr4 or better... a pr4 can easily compete for the good keywords against dogs with higher pageranks,
a good pagerank will make it easier to find webmasters who are willing to link with your alt text etc.

I'm not good in seo, but from I read it's how targetted the traffic sent by these SEs. A site which is ranked high for "buy viagra" keyword certainly will be having higher CR as compare to general term "viagra"
But a good high PR ceratinly give you advantage since other webmaster are willing to exchange link with you and your site will be always spidered by SEs spiders. This will make your new pages get spidered faster.
